Spinning for Knitting with Carol
Rhoades |
Sunday 10 - 5 pm
October 12 |
Level: For advanced beginner
and beyond spinners Instructor: Carol Rhoades
Cost: $125 |
Knitting with handspun yarns is a pleasure. To make the
most of that pleasure, it is worthwhile to consider the
yarn you will spin for a project. In this class, you will
learn how to choose fiber(s) and how to prepare and spin
them for hand knitting. The main focus of the class will
be on practicing the skills needed to have control over
yarn production for a purpose. We’ll begin with a
discussion of the qualities and production of commercial
knitting yarns and what we like to knit with. Since most
knitting yarns are woolen, we will practice carding and
long-draw spinning, producing lofty yarns from fine to bulky.
We’ll finish with a discussion of matching yarns
to knitting patterns, needles, and desired look, feel, and
durability of the knitted project.
|
| Supplies: |
- Students should bring a spinning wheel in good working
order, handcards for wool, flick card if possible, notepaper
and pen. Also bring your choice of knitting needles if you
want to sample your yarns.

Spinning for Socks with Carol
Rhoades |
Monday 10 - 5 pm
October 13 |
Level: For advanced beginner
and beyond spinners Instructor: Carol Rhodes
Cost: $125 |
Hand knitted socks
are nice but handspun and knitted socks are wonderful. In
this workshop, we’ll discuss the qualities that define
great socks--soft, elastic, hard-wearing--and learn how to
use various fibers and blends, preparations and spinning for
the socks of one’s dreams. This class is for anyone
who wants to explore spinning for a particular purpose. We’ll
discuss adjusting fiber preparation and spinning techniques
so that, for example, a Corriedale fleece can be used for
soft, warm, but relatively hard-wearing socks. We’ll
explore the effect of twist on yarn qualities and aim for
a balance of twist that produces long-wearing socks that also
feel good. Students will also examine how to adjust preparation
and spinning techniques for particular parts of the socks
and we’ll finish with suggestions for sock knitting
techniques, plus the washing and care of handspun socks. |
| Supplies: |
- Students should bring a spinning wheel in good working
order, handcards for wool, flick card if possible, notepaper
and pen. Also bring your choice of knitting needles if you
want to sample your yarns.
